Ending the War on Drugs

We have spent hundreds of billions of dollars on a “war on drugs” that has failed tremendously.  There were no arrests made for the Opioid Crisis inflicted upon Americans by predatory pharma companies who knew their drugs were addictive and debilitating. There were no arrests made when Vioxx was found to cause heart attacks. Even worse, the company that created it knew it would kill people but calculated the lawsuit settlement would cost them less than the revenue produced from selling the dangerous drug. Unfortunately, they were correct. We can no longer let these greedy drug companies off the hook in exchange for paying a few fines. Executives who knowingly endanger patients to maximize profits should face jail time and loss of control of the company..

While the War on Drugs may initially have had good intentions, outlawing certain drugs has created a black market where people are consuming laced substances. We already have laws against bad behavior: violence, property damage, operating a vehicle while intoxicated.  Cannabis should be federally legalized as it is no more dangerous than legal substances like alcohol. Those who have addictions should be referred for treatment, not thrown in jail. Decriminalize and regulate drugs instead of allowing the cartels to make billions selling laced substances to Americans.
